B O D Y; physical looks, traits, style of dress.
As most fae-type creatures, Malekith is recognizable with the well-known pointed ears. Unlike what is most common for Dark Elves, he and many of his kind have long lost their pigmentation and now are a sickly light gray that varies in shade from elf to elf. His, due to various reasons, is very pale near-white. Immediately noticeable is also his extraordinary height of 6'7" followed by his manner of dress. When in full garb, the attire easily suggests his status of King. However when not, he still wears a skintight black suit that covers every inch of his body save for his head and face. His people are completely hidden from the outside elements, wearing a headcasket and mask that helps protect them from the poisonous light. From this suit we can gather his body-structure is more athletic and agile than bulky.A unique trait among his kind is the black scelera of their eyes and vibrant almost ethereal blue irises. While most will never see the face of his people, Malekith often defiantly shows his face which bears many markings of the experiences he's survived. Depending on the place I take him from canon, he may or may not have one half of his face (the right side) completely charred black from lightning burns. Malekith also has high and prominent cheekbones, a strong jaw and a pronounced nose. His hair is pure white and most frequently pulled back into a double dutch braid with fishtails-- a common hairstyle among them all, though the tails and number of braids differ from elf to elf.
His gait is slow and purposed. Typically, Svartalfer are known to be so light on their feet it's near impossible to hear them however this is no longer the case. A potential side-effect of losing much of their grace to the light. Malekith is not heavy-footed but can be heard moving around but to the average ear it may be fainter than what is common. Though he carries his chin and chest high with pride an observant eye may notice occasional wavers in his stance, odd pauses in movement, and so forth. Small telling signs of their dying race. While time and the new universe has drained much of his grace one can see remnants of what he may have looked like eons ago. He and all his race still retain their sense of nobility and it shows in movement and stature.
M I N D; psyche, personality, general mentality.
KEY THEMES: Perseverance in the face of pain and loss, acts of complete desperation, to do what is necessary at all costs.MAIN MOTIVATION: To enact vengeance against the Asgardians and return the universe to darkness.
Malekith is a Dark Elf. Known as Svartalfer to most and as Älfenää/Älfeneel (plural) in their own tongue, sometimes also Harudheeniksa which literally translates to Resident of The Great Home. He'll thank you to note the difference.
The Dark Elves are a very aristocratic and scholarly people who were forced into becoming soldiers. They have song, and dance. They celebrate the arts and the sciences. Curious, and once incredibly peaceful. They hold their chin high, and once walked with incredible grace and nobility. Something that has mostly been long lost. Many deleted scenes share a softer side to this malicious creature that is reserved to a very few. Though, such stories he may well share should it gain him something.
Malekith is a very complex character. While he is categorized as a villain or antagonist, his evil or opposition to the main characters of the story is not among his defining traits. As a creature, and especially around those unknown, he is incredibly introverted. He's reserved, practical, and often very quiet. He preserves words and energy for those who deserve it but when in the presence of those who do deserve it there is a plethora of respect and even kindness. Even to outsiders, while certainly holding an air of superiority, he isn't unbearable to deal with or speak with.
He doesn't speak to hear himself talk wither, but when necessary, emotionally driven to, or when interested. Something of a wordsmith, capable of twisting truths and playing emotions when found necessary to do so. They value obedience and loyalty -- in others, and (for the latter part) within themselves. However, when desperate this will change as they are one who will make great sacrifices to continue surviving, to do what they believe is the better for their people. They are indeed the hero of their own story.
He is a planner, a schemer, and often not one to share the full details of these things with others. He can be manipulative and unforgiving; calculating, cautious, and has a bone-chilling mercilessness, but these things are not necessarily immediately obvious. Malekith is not the boisterous antagonist, though. Full of grief, pain, and tragedy, this Svartalfer is driven ultimately by purpose, swiftly followed by an aching need for vengeance against those who took what was dear to him. Some say that he is emotionless but nothing could be further from the truth. As someone who comes across as quite stable his recent actions prove to be driven from a place of emotion.
Sewing chaos for the sake of chaos is not within his list of priorities. If one was to give him an alignment it would be Lawful Evil. He stands for something, holds a belief, honors protocols, and so forth. Malekith rarely enjoys killing for killing sake and finds little to no pleasure in taking small purchase. Normally, he will remove what is in his way point-blank and nothing more. Otherwise, he doesn't care to look at you let alone lift a blade your way. Such is an unworthy honor. This said, there IS a small delight Malekith obtains from the destruction of those who stand in his way -- balming the pain he so often feels.
He is not fully unreasonable though he does operate under the philosophy of an eye for an eye. Your Gods dare to dream of being as Old Testament as this guy. When deciding upon something it is near impossible to dissuade him though he will (sometimes) hear the other side out. This only remains true when the other side speaks respectfully and intelligently, however.
Malekith, like all kings, is proud, and regal, and holds a defiance so strongly about him that he'll withstand pain to make a point about it. As he is often credited as being, he can be ruthless, merciless, and cruel. He knows just how to hurt someone beyond what death could bring them. He is an ancient being, and even with lacking the last 5,000 years of historical knowledge, Malekith has a keen emotional astuteness and as a creature of darkness this can become quite dangerous. As a scholar, it is his prerogative to consume as much information as possible. With his current purpose, this is especially useful to turn against those who bid him and his wrong.
While often seemingly stoic and cold, Malekith has an intensity surrounding him. Its not seen by many but he does have a deep love for his people. It is this love that drives the rage he feels against Asgard; this love that drives his determination to bring their universe back to darkness so that they may once again flourish instead of settle while they wither away. It is this love that made him hesitate turning Algrim into Kurse. He must lead his people with a strong fist against an entire universe that poisons them, there's no room to be seen as soft.
This said, there may still be holdovers from the time before the light. A curiosity, an enjoyment of sciences and philosophy. As a race, the Dark Elves work like a machine in harmony so much so it almost seems like they are hivemind although they are not. They have an awareness and consciousness shared between one another which aids in their coordination among other things. They are a race that does not understand civil strife and has never done war with one another in all the billions of years they've existed both in the old universe and the new.
S K I L L S; talents, powers, magics.
Important note: in the MCU, its clear their race is dying and they are no longer as powerful as they once were. I have borrowed some of 616's powers to give him a little more weight. This said, the majority of those powers and of all his powers are weak or inaccessible to him at this time.Once Upon A Time
Long ago, Malekith was capable of the following:
- teleportation
- energy projection
- physical malleability (includes shapeshifting)
- flight (by transforming into mist)
- illusion casting (somehow different than Asgardian magic)
- change the shape and appearance of other beings or objects.
Combatative
- Capable combatant favoring shorter blades and hand-to-hand.
- Skilled tactician
Generic Svartalfer Traits
- Intelligence (particularly in sciences and dark magic and things arcane)
- Superhuman strength
- Excelled speed
- Enhanced stamina
- Enhanced Durability
- Improved agility
- Quick reflexes
- Regeneration
- Graceful and light on their feet though
Intellect
Worth noting is the intelligence of most Svartalfer as it is often their greatest skill. With such a large capacity for storing information and learning, there is plenty of opportunities for new skills and abilities to be picked up along the way. Many of them excel in various scientific fields such as physics and chemistry. Malekith himself also possessed an incredible breadth of knowledge that easily rivals Odin however he IS lacking the past 5,000 years of history, currently. A silent Knower Of Things.
Technology
The Svartalfer technology is highly advanced but are powered by very different sources than most: black holes and dark matter. This probably means they also work with energy harvested from immense gravity and whatever the hell else goes on in there. This furthers, also, to their magic. While it's neither confirmed or denied I postulate that their technology is a combination of science and magic and their magic stems from dark matter.
WEAKNESSES
Light and matter are poisonous to his kind. Literally. They've been dying and growing weaker for quite some time. Their suits and masks help negate this. Many of the general skills and attributes have become less strong over the years. For example, they are less light on their feet and take longer to heal than they might have long ago, etc. He also has a lot of emotional weaknesses. While he feels deeply he only really knows how to express it through not expressing at all or through anger. Much of those variations had long been lost. He still mourns his wife and children and is willing to sacrifice his people for "the greater cause". Also, iron can grievously and permanently harm them as well as dispel and deflect their magic.
H I S T O R Y; times that made them, that broke them.
"Born of eternal night the dark elves come to steal away the light."A lot of this is general history but thats because he's the leader of their kind and sort of kinda like their God, really, so its all super relevant to him as a person or being.
And so the story goes that before the universe existed it was dark. The darkness breathed life and that life would become known as an elf and that elf would become known as Malekith. this is contradicted a shitload of times but Marvel be Marvel. Probably the Celestials came first and they, unknowingly, they created elves? Like, they were "the darkness" I don't fucking know dude. Anyway, Malekith is a name of dual meaning, both "The first man of his kind" and "A bad friend."
Malekith is an ancient, (kind of) first-born creation of the old universe and whom in which all of his kind that followed was created after; molded in his image. When they lived, everything was very small; a knot of life that thrived. Its undetermined how they lived but they did so there is that. Among the nothingness, one presumes. They created magic and life. They were scholars, sorcerers, and scientists. Once proud, graceful, beautiful and intelligent creatures. For quite some time they ruled the old universe without challenge but one day something changed. The elements collided, magic exploded, and the light was born. Universes, planets, elements they'd never known before.
Its also kind of not really explained how they came to Svartalfheim and in a deleted Malekith reminesces about his wife and children when things were less harmful ON Svartalfheim, I guess, so I feel like we can deduce from this that in the earlier years of the light they found a home, a planet, whose atmosphere worked for them but slowly as the universe continued to change it too became more and more poisoned and they were forced underground -- this forcing of their being underground happens after the first war because heck it took a long fucking time for anything else to happen after the big bang. So.
Which brings us to the first war. So, floating around nearish one another I guess or just connected somehow (do not ask me I have no idea wtf is up with MCU's Yggdrasil) were these nine planetary bodies. All of which at the time did battle with one another for the most part. It sort of seems like the Svartalfer didn't so much care about ruling over any of them tbh they just wanted the darkness back which of course he lead the opperations of. Given they were a peaceful people prior to the light I think they did conform eventually to a warrior structure in order to survive but I don't believe that they sought out the war as much as just took care of business when business came their way because fuck you guys, pretty much? In another scene, and this might (probably is) just him being manipulative, when Odin comments about revenge Malekith is sorta just like 'lol bro idgaf about Adgard'. Which I think he does, but like, 1. pride and 2. his concern is so much bigger than just Asgard? Like bro, they're dying.
So amongst all of this madness and whatever between the realms, Malekith created the Aether (Reality Stone) and planned to take advantage of the convergence. It brought the war to their home planet, obviously, and there the Aether was taken from him and he lost a huge number of his people including his family. In a desperate attempt to keep at least some of his people alive he ordered his first liutenant to deactivate the ships sacrificing a huge number of his men in order to destroy more Asgardians and then fled promising that this battle was not over. The Dark Elves went into space and hiberated for the next 5,000 years.
When he wakes up again you can see that he's notably even weaker actually almost wobbling to catch himself once woken. They return to Svartalfheim to find the universe is even worse off and more poisonous than it had been but yay the convergence is back and the Aether has called to him. He tracks it down to Asgard first where its IN Jane Foster. Kills Frigga cause yanno why not and gets half of his face burned off by Thor because of it. They escape to recover and recoup, he gets deceived by Loki though it doesn't really matter tbh cause he gets the Aether anyway, and then heads to Greenwich which is apparently the center of the earth. Oh and he hesitantly makes his lieutenant the last Kursed before heading to Asgard.
So then he gets to Earth, gives no shits about anyone there, unleashes the Aether and this is exactly where I take him from. So he is under the impression that he gonna win. For the sake of being a total asshole, I'm gonna say that the tethering process actually separates him from the Aether so he wont be coming with the Aether within in and honestly it will make him 5000% more bearable and playable this way.

This being said, Malekith is a complex character who in his mind and the mind of his people is the hero of his own tale. While he is categorized as a villain or antagonist, his evil or opposition to the main characters of the story is not among his defining traits. He is not a cackling fiend or chaotic madman.
As a creature, and especially around those unknown, he is incredibly introverted. Malekith is reserved, practical, and observing. He is driven, determined, strong-willed. When he says he will do something he will do it or die trying, period. While it may seem that he is willing to throw away so much to his thirst for vengeance it's important to say that he does so with heavy-hearted consideration-- willing to make the sacrifices to finish what he'd started, to do what he believes is best and needs to be done.
Malekith preserves words and energy for people and situations that deserve it but when in the presence of those who do deserve it there is a plethora of respect and even sometimes kindness. To outsiders, while certainly holding an air of superiority, he isn't unbearable to deal with or speak with depending on the topic. He doesn't speak to hear himself talk either, but when necessary, emotionally driven to, or when interested. Something of a wordsmith, capable of twisting truths and playing emotions when found necessary to do so. They value obedience and loyalty -- in others, and (for the latter part) within themselves. He is a planner, a schemer, and often not one to share the full details of these things with others. Judgemental of those not his kind, especially. Normally, he will remove what is in his way point-blank and nothing more. Otherwise, he doesn't care to look at you let alone lift a blade your way. Such is an unworthy honor. CRAU developments: N/A
Key themes: Perseverance in the face of pain and loss, acts of complete desperation, to do what is necessary at all costs.
Main Motivation: To enact vengeance against the Asgardians and return the universe to darkness.
Skills:
Important note: in the MCU, its clear their race is dying and they are no longer as powerful as they once were. I have borrowed some of 616's powers to give him a little more weight. This said, the majority of those powers and of all his powers are weak or inaccessible to him at this time.
Sorcery
It is often the Dark Elves that are credited for the existence of the dark arts. Much like most of their abilities, this magic is typically harvested through dark matter and their innate connection to darkness. It enables all sorts of abilities such as creating and destroying mass (something they frequently put within their weaponry), fabricating grand illusions, and general manipulation of dark matter and energy. They are knowledgeable in the occult and the arcane as well. Malekith possesses the ability to shapeshift, create grand illusions, general energy blasts, and to create & destroy mass. However, it has been a long time since he's done so.
Other Magical Abilities
Among the other magical abilities once possessed includes teleportation and telekinesis; they are not telepathic creatures however they do share a collective consciousness among their own kind that makes organizing between them quite easy and fluid. These abilities were brought back into the fray by the aether but again, due to their weakened states, it's undetermined whether he can still do this at this time. He was once known to be fast as he was graceful but his speed has greatly decreased over the years and now lays at a painful average.
Combatative
Originally the Svartalfer were not warriors or soldiers at all, so the combative nature and skills they have acquired over the years is actually not innate to them. This said, Malekith is a capable combatant favoring shorter blades and hand-to-hand. Like all things, he has become weaker as time progresses but still manages to hold his own against many different species.
Generic Svartalfer Traits
Dark elves in general possess gifted intellects and are extraordinarily intelligent creatures particularly in sciences and dark magic, arguably most arcane and occult stem from them. They have superhuman strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility, and reflexes. They are known to be able to regenerate and heal at a faster rate than most however again this has slowed down over the years. Known to be graceful and light on their feet though this too has become less true over the years.
Intellect
Worth noting is the intelligence of most Svartalfer as it is often their greatest skill. With such a large capacity for storing information and learning, there are plenty of opportunities for new skills and abilities to be picked up along the way. Many of them excel in various scientific fields such as physics and chemistry. Malekith himself also possessed an incredible breadth of knowledge that easily rivals Odin however he IS lacking the past 5,000 years of history, currently. A silent Knower Of Things.
Piloting, Engineering & Technology
While normally, due to being King, he is not the one at the helm, Malekith knows and understands how to pilot. He understands the process of building their ships, creating weaponry, and all sorts of Svartalfer technology. Much of their technology is, like other things, a combination of magic and dark energy along with physical machinery. However, some technology such as their ships also have a biological component to it. As if the ship itself is also alive. With their advancements in technology they have created various things such as high energy blasters, dark energy bombs that completely destroy energy/atoms, and cloaking devices to name a few. However tech is also used in various other places for healing and more.
WEAKNESSES
Boy, for a villain this guy has a lot of them and most stem from the fact that they as a species struggle to live in a world with light. He is weak, and his proud defiance that urges him to usually be unmasked doesn't help any. Another common fae-type weakness however is iron. Items made from iron can injure them grievously and also, sometimes, permanently. Should one possess iron on their person they will also be far less susceptible to illusions and magic.
Malekith also has an extremely detrimental weakness in his psychology and it is the past. His ache to return to darkness is hollowing and great and he finds conflict with how much he is willing to sacrifice in order to achieve it. Right down to the people he loves the most.

Sample: And from the growing darkness suddenly comes this -- light, ripped from the aether as it had been ripped from him. Upon the platform comes a tall creature. Standing about 6'7" in weight. His skin a sickly pale gray save for half his face, charred black. He wears a skin-tight suit beneath the common uniform -- covering every inch of his skin save for face and pointed ears.
His proud stance wavers until a hand catches his body and presses against brick. Stabilizing, slowly, with a deep breath in. Pain, but one he'd long become accustomed to. This, however, was not what made his fists clench as eyes dropped to them. He cannot feel his people, cannot feel the aether, but he can feel anger in spades -- shaking through him, penetrating every fiber of muscle that tensed under the pressure of his rage where teeth grit and he let out an echoing, "Asgardians!"
Again. A fist rose, making such a poor indent upon the brick that it all but angered him further. Weak, he was weak, they were all weak. For but one moment there was hope and opportunity that had been taken from him again. So was this their fate; had the darkness truly abandoned them? Were they really destined to die? And breathing brought no such comfort but be damned he would do so, defiantly, until it killed him.
Malekith turns his head sharply, previewing the few other bodies upon this... whatever it was. Noting the uniforms, noting he had such thing over his suit as well (ridiculous who designed this nonsense?). Some seemed just as disoriented. Others less so, and some continue to pour out of an object in the near distance. Momentarily overwhelmed with nonsense chatter for a moment until he quiets his senses; regains composure. Piercing blues search for something familiar. Many races he does not know; some he does. A slow, a steady, a purposed stride through people until feet stop at someone deemed -- by their composure at least -- somewhat acceptable to speak with.
"Explain this to me," it comes as an ask, echoed and dark but no longer holding the rage it once had moments prior. Collected, calm seeming. Seeming, at least.
Notes: I asked about this in the chat but the light is poisonous to his kind so their suits and masks help manage this and allow them to keep living. Typically he forgoes the mask out of defiance but being without the suit as well might be overwhelming for his body. Can he come with the base suit? (this is just the black suit & head casket that allows the mask to be worn, no plate armor or weapons) -- If not, that will be his item. If he can, then maybe his item will be the mask.
